In the Black Books episode ‘Fever’, Irish misanthrope Bernard dreams of finding himself a girlfriend for the warmer months: “She’ll be a summery girl… She’ll play tennis and wear dresses and have bare feet, and in the autumn, I’ll ditch her, because she’s my summer girl!”
Spanish quartet Delorean make music that could act as the soundtrack to this kind of fleeting romance. Their latest EP, Ayrton Senna, is comprised of five tracks of electro-pop that’s been marinated in Barcelonian sunshine. The 1960s chanson-esque “oohs” of opener ‘Deli’, and its repetition of the phrase “I like the time I spend with you, girl”, result in an expression of summer love so straightforward that even Bernard might not struggle to express it. Its simplistic, fun-loving spirit brings to mind a less ponderous take on the playful request of YACHT’s ‘Psychic City’: “come on over, we’re having a party for you”.
‘Monsoon’ is more danceable, with a searing electric guitar line and fast-paced drumbeat providing a backdrop for frontman Ekhi Lopetegi’s clipped (and sometimes unfathomable) vocals. Subtle increases in texture maintain the listener’s interest and temper the track’s repetitiveness, while a keyboard riff reminiscent of that of LCD Soundsystem’s ‘All My Friends’ imitates that track’s sense of reflection.
To my mind, ‘Seasun’ takes itself too seriously to equal the charm of ‘Deli’ and ‘Monsoon’—its female vocals are suggestion of Enya, and its grandiose piano chords, of Vangelis’ ‘Chariots of Fire’. The added percussive elements of John Talabot’s ‘Kids & Drum’ remix gave the track much-needed energy, while the final number of the EP, ‘Big Dipper’, restates the dreaminess of Delorean’s vision: “Baby, if you want to, we could run away up into the sun.”
Delorean makes for a different sort of summer playlist than Discovery’s debut LP, or Wolfgang Ama-deus Phoenix do, as their lightness of touch creates a sense of spaciousness and distance that’s unheard of in Discovery’s thumping synths and the jittery piano of ‘Lisztomania’. Indeed, Delorean’s dancing pace, feathery guitar strums and detached synths create a sense of nostalgia and yearning that is at odds with the futuristic focus of the band’s name.
Therefore, perhaps it’s best to describe Delorean as making music for good times gone by. When you hear ‘Deli’ in autumn or winter, it will remind you of driving down a highway to nowhere in particular, with the windows drawn and your elbow resting outside of the vehicle, while at the time you were listening to the Top 40 countdown on the radio—or Discovery. In short, it’s the sort of music that will remind you of summer, when summer is over and done.

: Pau Gasol had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead world champion Spain to a 85-63 win over Serbia in the final of the European basketball championship Sunday.
The victory gave Spain its first European title after six runner-up finishes, including a one-point loss two years ago to Russia in front of its home crowd.
The Spaniards dominated from the start at both ends of the court, playing pressure man-to-man defense and getting out on the break for easy baskets to take a 15-point first quarter lead. Serbia never recovered.
Gasol, a star with the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers, scored down low and blocked three shots on his way to winning the tournament MVP honors.
“It was a great game, and obviously we won the final that we lost twice before this year, so I’m extremely happy and it’s an unforgettable day for us,” Gasol said. “We just worked so hard to win this championship and I’m just super proud of my teammates.”
Guard Rudy Fernandez chipped in with 13 points for Spain, while Uros Tripkovic led Serbia with 15 points.
“We lost the first half, and probably the game was finished,” Serbia coach Dusan Ivkovic said. “The Spanish team was better and they deserved absolutely this title.”

America’s military Achilles heel, guerrilla warfare, has again trod in something unpleasant, as top US general in Afghanistan McChrystal has reported to Congress. General McChrystal says the US needs at least another 10,000 troops within the next year.

To start the week off right I turned to Bollywood to see what the buzz is there this morning. What popped out at me was super hot model, singer, and actress Sherlyn Chopra. In a recent interview India’s hottest sex symbol was not only candid about her recent breast augmentation, but her ego seems to be inflated similarly, and perhaps justifiably so. Her recent role as a sort of femme fatal in director Anurag Singh’s “” may just skyrocket the starlet to the pinnacle she so passionately seeks. But, having an that borders on pay-per-view soft porn is definably not where true stardom resides.
Watching young actors, models, singers and other artists climbing the ladder to stardom is pretty commonplace, but every once in a while we run across particularly interesting cases. This is so in looking at the career of Sherlyn Chopra (formerly Mona Chopra). In all my reports on Bollywood I can say honestly that I have never seen more YouTube videos of a celebrity, let along as many with sexuality stamped on them so obviously. To be certain Chopra has the sex appeal, and obvously the industry behind her to help make it happen for her. However, regardless of her obvious intent to bare just about anything the director ask for, I believe the actress has something more than lovely skin to offer – it is somewhere in the eyes, and innocence and timidity beneath what sometimes seems like contrived sensuality. Check out the light hearted artistry of Dil Bole Hadippa below.
The making of a movie star is often helped out by talents, charisma, or even sometimes dumb luck. But, none of these commodities is an absolute necessity, let alone inherent in many famous people we know. For Chopra however, there is something missing if she ever wants to get to the top. I think any good advisor would tell her that in her case some mystery added to her “way out front” and publicized mystique as a sex symbol is something the actress has to add to her repertoire. The point is, Sherlyn is going to have to decide if she wants to be a Pamela Anderson semi-starlet, a Michelle Pfeiffer model turned superstar, or something in between. The track she is on now certainly leads down the Pam Anderson road.
In any event, Sherlyn does have the star quality. Refining and redefining that special something into something audiences (besides teenage Youtube watchers) can’t do without is obviously the next step for the 25 year old beauty. The history of film and celebrity is fraught with stories just like this one. Talented beautiful people set amidst a backdrop where fame and fortune walk hand in hand with failure and obscurity. This recent role in Dil Bole Hadippa!, a characteristically Indian light and charming film, may just be enough to take the none-too-shy actress to the next level. At some point though, as with all roads to success, twists and turns become less frequent and where a star is, is where a star is. There has to be something outside the sexuality, any soft porn star has that to be frank. Check out the videos below and see if you can see a star beneath the facade.
